Overview

About Trails

Born Learning Trails are outdoor learning experiences that help parents, grandparents, and caregivers turn everyday outings into fun, meaningful learning moments for young children. Developed by United Way Worldwide and early childhood experts, these Trails make it easy for communities to support early learning, language development, and school readiness — right where families already gather.

Trails include interactive learning signs placed along a walking path or outdoor space. Each sign offers simple, expert-approved activities that adults and children do together — no training required.

Trails are designed to:

  • Encourage positive adult-child interaction
  • Build early language, literacy, and thinking skills
  • Spark curiosity, creativity, and confidence
  • Support physical movement and exploration
  • Promote school readiness during the years that matter most

The approach is intentionally simple: everyday moments become learning moments when caregivers are given the right prompts.

Installed in parks, greenspaces, schoolyards, river walks, playgrounds, and community hubs, a Born Learning Trail are  a visible, enduring symbol of a community’s commitment to young children.

Signs are available in English and Spanish and translations can also be made to order in other languages. The trail can be ordered as a kit and includes instructions, hardware, and reinforced, full-color metal signs. Building materials and can be locally sourced and installation days are a great way to tap local volunteers. Signs can be customized to include sponsor names, company logos, or other investor recognition.

NEW in 2026: Born Learning STEAM Trail

STEAM Trails build on the Born Learning principle of everyday learning by introducing Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math concepts through outdoor exploration.

STEAM Trail activities include:

  • Observing and identifying types of clouds, birds, trees, and bugs
  • Exploring balance, gravity, movement, and direction
  • Recognizing shapes, patterns, and numbers
  • Using creativity, imagination, and problem-solving

Each STEAM activity encourages discovery of the natural world while strengthening early learning and language skills essential for school.

cOMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND PARTNERSHIPS

Born Learning Trails are more than signage — they are a community engagement and impact strategy.

Communities use Trails to:

  • Demonstrate a public commitment to early childhood education
  • Increase family engagement in parks and public spaces
  • Create inclusive learning opportunities outside traditional classrooms
  • Align with school readiness, literacy, and early learning initiatives
  • Strengthen partnerships with sponsors, volunteers, and employers

Because Trails are permanent, they continue delivering impact long after installation day.

Built for Partnerships, Sponsorships, and Volunteers

Born Learning Trails create meaningful opportunities to engage:

  • Corporate sponsors and employers
  • Volunteers and service groups
  • Civic leaders and elected officials
  • Early childhood partners and advocates
  • School leaders

Sponsors can be recognized on Trail signage, benches, and installation materials, while volunteers can participate in planning, installation, landscaping, and long-term maintenance. The Trail naturally lends itself to media events, Day of Caring projects, and campaign launches.

Where can a Born Learning Trail be installed?

Born Learning Trails can be installed in a wide variety of spaces, including:

  • City or county parks
  • Greenspaces and river walks
  • Schoolyards, playgrounds, and early childhood centers
  • Libraries and children’s museums
  • Community centers and faith campuses
  • Corporate or employer campuses
  • Shopping centers or mixed-use developments

Each Trail can be customized to fit the site (even indoors!), audience, and community goals.
